There are many different types of topical medication available for the treatment of acne, but one chemical that has been in use since Roman times is the use of sulfur. Even back in early days, sulfur baths were used to treat all sorts of skin conditions including acne. These days sulfur acne products are available both as standalone products and as an ingredient in more common brands.

Due largely to the smell of sulfur oxide, otherwise known as rotten egg gas, the most common way in which sulfur is used is as an ingredient that contains more a pleasant smell.

The effective properties of sulfur are that it dries out the skin to the point where a layer will peel off. Although this sounds like a bad thing for the skin, it is good for acne, drying the oiliness from the skin and preventing the pores to become blocked.
