In the nearly five years I’ve spent working for the public library, I have had three different jobs and had first-hand exposure to many more. Recruiters from library school make every single job sound like it’s unbelievably exciting, but that’s not the case. Plenty of the library assistant jobs are good, all are tolerable, but in my experience so far, there are only a few that people really, really seem to love.

Below I’m going to talk about the three jobs in libraries I’ve had, in chronological order.

1. Library Assistant
This essentially means that you’re an assistant to a librarian. Your duties will include circulation–checking books in an out–and doing some toting and fetching for the professional reference workers. This was my first job. I liked it a lot. The occasional downside was that out of every 100 people I helped, two or three of them were nasty or having a bad day. They usually took it out on us.

2. Librarian
Most people don’t know the difference between librarians and circulation staff. Librarians are usually perceived as the people tell you to be quiet and check your books out for you. But the job duties of a librarian are simple: answer questions and connect people to information and answers. It’s a wonderful job that I love to death.

3. Library manager jobs
My least favorite by far. The only real problem for me was that managing a library feels a lot like managing any old building. Being an administrator took me away from the things that made me love libraries in the first place: the people and the books. I stepped out of management a year ago and will never go back.

What does my library future hold? I’m getting more and more interested in becoming a photo librarian, which is simply a library worker who organizes and archives images. I’m a photography amateur and am increasingly excited about the amount of opportunities that a library degree can provide.

Above all, librarians are curious people. I think that’s why I’m never able to stay in one job for too long, although I certainly have no plans on leaving the field. My job helps me get better every day.
