a wealth of information to feed your curiosity
So you have decided that you want a piece of sideboard furniture, but you cannot decide which kind is right for you. Well, the first thing you need to do is decide what the role of this particular piece of furniture is going to be. Will it be a piece for the dining area, which is the traditional location for a sideboard? Or perhaps you are joining the craze that has people using these pieces as bedroom storage, or even linen storage, with the sideboard placed in the hallway. A sideboard can fill any of these functional roles, and the best thing is it can do it while looking great at the same time!
As far as material choices go, oak sideboards are by far the most popular. the biggest reason is due to the availability of oak. Oak has been the most popular wood for furniture making for hundreds of years. Since oak is a hard wood, it a well made piece of oak furniture will last a very long time. Being a hard wood can work against the furniture maker in some ways, because it may be difficult to put the level of intricate design into the wood that you want.
Mahogany sideboards are less popular than those made from oak, but I would argue a mahogany sideboard is hands down one of the most beautiful of all the different kinds of sideboard furniture. Like oak, mahogany is a hard wood, so the furniture maker has to deal with the same limitations when it comes to elaborate design. But mahogany has sort of a reddish tone to it naturally, so the level of detail does not have to be all that great and the wood itself will still look amazing.
Teak sideboards are even less popular than those made from mahogany, but they also have some great unique features. Teak is among the hardest of woods, and it tends to change tones as it ages, which many people find appealing.
Other wood types used in the production of sideboard furniture are pine, cypress, and others. The best way to approach your sideboard research and decision making is to try to see at least a couple of each type so you know what to expect. Then decide if the piece is something you want to last many years or just your current situation. that last decision will determine if you go for a hand made piece or one that was mass produced.
