Deciding on Dog Kennel Size

kennel-1Even if your dog is primarily and indoor dog, there will always be times when you need to contain your dog outdoors for a time.  A dog kennel is the perfect place to do this.  But how do you decide what size dog kennel is best for you?

First of all, when purchasing a dog kennel, think about how big your pet is going to grow. Don’t buy a kennel based on the small puppy size, but research how big your dog is going to get and purchase accordingly.  The bigger the dog, the larger area he needs and the bigger the kennel should be. In general your dog should be able to go inside the kennel, turn around and curl up or lay down stretched out on its side.  He may have to lower his head to go inside–that’s fine, as long as there’s sufficient room for him to be comfortable once inside.

Another important point to note is that the bigger, stronger breeds of dog need a sturdy and solid kennel.  If the kennel is too flimsy you may find your dog wrecking the kennel and managing to escape.

If you’re not sure what size dog kennel to buy, you should discuss this with your local pet shop. They should be able to recommend what size dog kennel and run would be best for your particular breed of dog.
