Google has two major programs that can take a teeny little website and help it to start making money.  One of these programs is called Google AdWords.  This program is really a pretty simple advertising program.  Here’s how it works:

With Google AdWords, you ask Google to do some advertising for you.  Google posts your ads onto relevant search queries, based on the kind of content your site contains.  They’ll match your site to queries based on keywords and topics, and then when people search for something related, they’ll see an ad in their sidebar.  When someone clicks on that ad, it will take them straight to your site.  This program usually charges on a pay-per-click basis, which means that you’re only paying for the ads that actually get someone to come to your site.  You don’t pay for ads that are ignored, because they’re never clicked.

The other prominent program Google offers is called AdSense.  Google AdSense is based on the same concept as AdWords, with one major difference: this time, you’re doing the advertising.  AdSense allows Google the opportunity to post relevant ads on your website, which means that your viewers are clicking on ads for other sites, making them (and Google) money.  This also means that they’re making you money, since Google pays you for the privilege of using that ad space.  Google gets to post more ads, so they’re happy – and you get a check every week from the successful ads.
