The Problem With Female Hair Transplants

Women and men are different in lots of ways. This doesn’t mean one is better than the other it just means there are differences in their bodies and how they react to certain medical conditions. This is shown very dramatically in how men and women exhibit the symptoms from Androgenic Alopecia.

Androgenic Alopecia is a medical condition that for years was thought to only affect men. In fact, the common name for this problem is male pattern baldness. It wasn’t until recently that it was shown to affect both men and women when it comes to hair loss.

The problem with making that determination was the fact that the results of the hair loss are so different between the sexes. The word pattern in the common name comes from the fact that men tend to lose their hair in a set balding pattern. Women on the other hand will usually experience thinning hair over their entire scalp. This difference as a dramatic effect on the efficacy of one important treatment. Hair transplant for men surgery has been used for years to treat baldness and hair thinning but the hair transplant women surgery has never been useful. The reason for this the male pattern allows for a good donation area for the transplanting of hair from at the back of the head. This area is not part of the pattern that appears with Androgenic Alopecia and thus there are many hairs here for removal to be inserted into the bald spot.

The female hair transplants are not effective because there is not an area of thick growth to act as a donation site. Instead, as noted above, women tend to lose hair over their entire scalp resulting in thinning hair. Without an area of thick growth there is really no good way to transplant hair because the hair restoration surgeon would just remove hairs from one thin spot, thus making it thinner, in order to implant them in another. This has stymied doctors for years but help is on the way in new techniques to treat female hair loss.
