Animal lovers will agree that a dog truly is a man’s best friend.

And for those of us who love dogs, rescue centres will be quick to point out that there is always a wide selection of dogs and puppies looking for new homes.

The availability of free dogs and free puppies invariably attracts attention.

To describe them as ‘free’ does not mean that they are just there, waiting and ready for anybody to pick them up and walk off with them.

Thankfully, it doesn’t work like that.

While, yes, theoretically, these canines are free, in reality there is a fee involved.

But it is not for the actual animal. The rehoming fee is to cover the expenses of preparing the little one for adoption.

It covers microchipping, vaccinations and in the case of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in the UK, an ID tag, starter pack of food, a month’s free pet insurance, three months free out-patient vet care for any condition related to the animal’s stay at the Home and access to their Behaviour Advice Line. In many cases, the set fee also includes neutering.

On the subject of anybody simply picking up one of the Home’s animals and walking off with them, that is not the case at all.

Potential owners are carefully screened and their homes checked. Animals and prospective owners are matched to make sure everything works out well for both pet and owner.

If it doesn’t the animals are always welcomed back at most bona-fide homes, where problems will be ironed out and the possibility raised of a different dog for the adopter and a different home for the dog.

There is no shame in returning a dog if unsuitable. The animal might be too boisterous for its new owner, it might not get on with other dogs or cats already in the household.

Other reasons for an animal’s return might include a birth or a death in the family, a move into rented accommodation where pets are not allowed, or a long-term stay in hospital.
