a wealth of information to feed your curiosity
Gold prices are high, prompting people to dig into their chests and drawers for some promising nuggets of jewelry to unload. Before you do, here are some tips on how to sell gold jewelry.
Gather all the gold you are willing to get rid of and separate it into two piles. One is for the crappy stuff, broken bracelets, unmatched earrings, anything ugly, old, damaged. All you are going to get for these items is their scrap value.
The other pile will be the pretty stuff, jewelry that you don’t wear for whatever reason – it’s too big, too small, not your taste anymore (or wasn’t ever, but thanks, Grandma, all the same). You should try to sell these pieces as jewelry, not for scrap, which would in most cases bring you in far less money.
Visit a local jeweler who buys gold and get an offer from him. He may point out that a piece or two in your “pretty” pile really isn’t worth much and you’re better off selling it for scrap. That may very well be. But you’re not making a deal right then and there. You should get three estimates before making a decision because prices can vary significantly. Recently, a local newspaper reported how they brought the same set of jewelry to several area gold buyers and the quotes ranged from just over $1,000 to about $4,000! Better believe it pays to shop around!
