Making a Decision to Demolish

There are several types of demolition procedures applied to demolish structures. First, size of the structure and its location are key factors in deciding the appropriate type of demolition. The process of demolition is simply the opposite of construction. While construction involves putting up a building, demolition involves pulling a structure or building down. As such, you may need to seek assistance from demolition contractors, who are experts in the process of pulling down buildings and structures.

Demolition can be necessary for various reasons. One of the common reasons is the age and safety status of the structure. Oftentimes, it is basically just a matter of doing away with the old to create space for new structures. The work of demolition contractors is sometimes prompted by the emergence of newer construction methods and changing building and construction styles. Once the decision to demolish has been made, there are several ways to go about the demolition.

All demolition types involve safety precautions, but some are deemed to be safer than others. Usually, the safest and easiest method is the recommended one. For smaller structures like one storey buildings, a simple manual demolition can do. Mechanical demolition is closely related to manual demolition, and smaller structures often use both manual and mechanical means. Mechanical demolition applies machines such as bulldozers, excavators and cranes.

For larger structures, wrecking balls are used. These are heavy balls attached to a sturdy cable and swung by huge cranes, with the idea being to batter the building into pieces. This process involves expert personnel, otherwise known as demolition contractors.

The other type of demolition is undermining. In this process, a collapse of the building is caused by removing vital supporting structures, usually near the foundation. Done appropriately, undermining can demolish the building fast, and in the desired manner.
