Nail biting is a habit that afflicts children, teenagers and adults alike although it tends to be more predominant amongst children and teenagers, with an estimated 30% of all children and up to 45% of teenagers engaging in it. There are numerous suggestions for cures that will help stop nail biting ranging from the usual to the very unusual. However, the first step in being cured from nail biting is to make a firm decision that you want to stop nail biting.  Unless a person is firmly convinced of the need to stop it will be very difficult to do so.

One cure to help stop nail biting is to apply something unpleasant tasting to your fingernails. There are quite a few commercial products available that you apply to your nails, which taste very unpleasant when tasted.  Other suggestions to stop nail biting including having women paint their fingernails as this can be a deterrent to some women, (though not all.)  The usual treatment of Habit Reversal Training works quite well with some people but is ineffective with others.  For serious cases of nail biting hypnotherapy sometimes works well.

Often, with nail biting, what is a help for one person does not do anything for another.  If you are determined to stop nail biting there are several simple steps to help get you started. First of all, write your goal down and post it, along with a picture of beautifully manicured nails, somewhere in plain view.  Next, decide on an actual date when you are going to begin breaking this habit. Share this date with your friends and relatives, as it is much harder to go back on it if you do this.  Decide on what methods you are going to employ on how to help stop nail biting.  Buy whatever you need days before your starting day so that you have everything you need. If the day you were going to start comes along and you still do not have the nasty tasting cream or polish for your fingernails, chances are that you may find it very easy to postpone your starting day. Finally, choose something to reward yourself with once you have achieved your goal.
